History

The 80s saw Yamaha dominate the synthesizer industry with its groundbreaking FM synthesis. The release of the DX7 in 1983 caused a deep crisis for manufacturers specialized in analog synthesizers. Yamaha not only patented the new synthesis model but also produced cost-effective and reliable chips for digital sound generation making these new keyboards more powerful and reliable, more cost-effective and easily industrialized. The blow to Italian companies was severe, even for those that had long invested and innovated by introducing digital systems into their projects. They faced significant challenges because the 'core' of their equipment remained anchored to traditional analog generation, which was no longer competitive.

Italian FM

But some companies, despite suffering a setback, managed to reorganize and respond with some interesting proposals after a few years of hardship. Specifically, ELKA, the company that designed and marketed the glorious ELKA SYNTEX just a few years earlier, successfully acquired a series of ICs capable of generating sounds and waveforms using FM technology. With these components, ELKA created a range of highly interesting products for that era. Although the chips used (the YM2203) were manufactured by Yamaha and primarily intended for the video game and arcade console sector, ELKA's creative engineers successfully integrated them into their musical instruments, creating a new FM product line.

EK-44 : The flagship FM Synth

The top-of-the-line synthesizer created with these new chips was the EK-44, a multi-timbral 4-OP FM synthesizer with 18 voices of polyphony and 8 oscillators. Inside, it houses two identical sound generators named DCG1 and DCG2, each employing 6 YM2203 chips (4 operators with 8 different FM algorithms), making it capable of generating multiple sounds simultaneously — a remarkable feat for its time. The 2 voice processors can be split, layered or played as 8 independent parts with own Midi channels and mix volume.

Usability

The EK-44 operates in a similar manner to the Yamaha DX7, except that the its LCD display is a little more informative, although some information (the equivalent of the DX7's algorithm charts) is hidden from the user so you don't have to worry about it. So, when we go through the basic parameters, keep in mind that most of them are represented in the LCD display by an eight-section bar chart. Whether we're talking about oscillator volumes, frequencies, envelope levels or whatever, eight little columns in the display give you a good visual indication of the current state of affairs, while the first eight of the sixteen Performance Registration buttons directly beneath the display allow you to choose which of the available levels you're editing.

"Appropriately, FM60P is the sixth NYZ release to focus directly on FM synthesis, and the first six-operator variant of the FMX0P releases (which was incidentally also the first conceptual iteration of the sub-series of FM synth works, despite being released this far down the line). Given this provenance, those familiar with FM synthesis might assume Burraston would begin a six-operator exploration with the ubiquitous Yamaha DX7 - perhaps the most iconic FM synthesizer of all time - but instead, he's taken a different tack entirely, and opted to use a modern machine - the Kodamo EssenceFM, a megalith of FM processing power with a mind-numbing 300 operators available within its outwardly unassuming racked interface - albeit acting in an ascetic sense by limiting himself deliberately to only six operators. Longtime Psoma listeners will also note a referential connection with PMFM, a prior release that also utilized the EssenceFM in its construction.

On a technical level, FM60P manifests itself through the arcane pathways of Burraston's cellular automata research, which informs both the sequencing information sent into the synthesizer, and the microtuning of the voices also. Beyond this initial working ethos, the designs and numerical relationships of the operators' ratios have been arranged with the use of three different sets of Fibonacci number sequences, as well as tuning dispositions referencing Alain Daniélou's Harmonic Division of the Octave. Fibonacci freaks will be pleased to know that this arrangement of operators will form intricate setups of Golden Ratio based FM timbres.

For many listening and reading, these points of reference may have no meaning whatsoever, and we here at Psoma would like to offer the consolation that there is no right or wrong way to listen to or interact with any sound matter found in our catalog, or anywhere else for that matter. It could even be said that part of our initiative in publishing works such as these is defined by a desire to simply introduce more challenging and concept-driven music into the world, in order to bring new and stimulating experiences to people who are both familiar and unfamiliar with the deeper details of sound itself.

So what does that leave us with then? The sound of FM60P could be described as a chiming din of glassy tones playing in serpentine unison with sub-bass hum - but this is only a small prologue of two minutes, quickly pulling back the curtain to reveal a massive hour-long drone wall, presented in Burraston's characteristic style of rippling heavily modulated swaths of energy, underpinned by a more midrange foundation of a pulsing alien plinth. Filter sweeps reveal many more dimensions to the layers that are not initially obvious, bringing incessant bass tones and arpeggiator-like sections into focus before the wavering sea reclaims them.

Burraston's music is unlike anything else in the space it is able to inhabit, simultaneously sounding artificial and unnatural to an almost impossible degree, while also functionally conveying itself in elemental and naturalistic ways. Everything is an object, an outline, a weather system or a color, each possessing a specific set of attributes that communicate synaesthetically with the listener, as temperatures and spatial indicators, rather than confining themselves to much more arbitrary traditional sensations.

"Continuing from SEM with his exploration of GForce software instruments, Burraston builds a wall with the Oddity3, an expansive modern iteration of the ARP Odyssey that includes several new additions and functions. ODT3 consists of two such instances of the Oddity3 to accomplish the wide stereo image, both focusing on the 4035 ladder filter from the short-lived Odyssey mark II (only one of three filter types present within the softsynth). Landing somewhere on the map between the Cell Meditations and the subharmonic hums of TESCO SYNFETIX, ODT3 pulses in shallow waves that betray the depth beneath their softened surfaces. Close listening yields wondrous results, especially in headphones, as the swirling mass of the frequency spectrum slowly rises like a shipwreck called back to shore. Almost imperceptibly, the true substance of this piece is revealed in microscopic increments, until it overtakes the senses and surrounds everything, filling the air with vibrating particulate and soporific electricity, glimmering like a portal to an adjacent dimension."

It can be so many things.
8 tracks of Model cycles chord machines with deeper control, 2x LFO per track, full envelopes, dual filters, p-lockable FX track. Or half a Rytm , plus new digital drum synth and bass/lead synth machines.

Or a mix between.

All with a tasty chunk of analog Heat drive, filter, and EG, but p-lockable!

There is an inverted envelope shape in the analog fx that I use as a master compressor. The drive is lovely. I also love using some of the analog kicks with a bandpass filter for textures. Can even get kinda of vinyl pops and clicks out of these.

Can have up to 3 simultaneous analog DVCO machines."

Meet the machines
There are 35 sound-generating machines to call on, covering a wide range of drum and melodic sounds. Some machines have been reimagined from Analog Rytm and Model:Cycles, with deeper sound control for the latter, while others are entirely new to the world.

For you to create and personalize your sound, we’ve made sure you’ve got a set of parameter controls tailor-made for each machine. They let you quickly tweak the nature of each type of sound, showing you just the relevant options. Comprehensive without being overwhelming. Let loose with analog or digital overdrive, depending on the tracks you’re playing with.

The graphics more than play their part too, with plenty of animated icons offering visual guidance and extra clarity on how each parameter affects the sound. The joys of tweaking shouldn’t only be for the ears after all.

Special effects
Syntakt lets you route any of your synth tracks or external audio sources through the FX block. This gives you analog distortion and filtering, and a couple of LFOs to go to town with. Additionally, you can also call on Delay and Reverb as powerhouse send effects.

And all of the above effects can be sequenced with the FX track. Have them kick in at just the right moment. Add accents and dramatic changes to the selected tracks or external audio. Or use it as a master track for ducking and gating effects.

Modify the moment
Wield a little extra trig craft using the four modifiers, offering four varied levels of expression. Configure the first two modifiers to give you the retrig or velocity behavior you desire, and use the other two to access custom intensities of other parameters. They’re ready for action regardless of which synth track you’re using.

And the best bit is that they don’t just give you that extra playability fun in the here and now, you can also capture the moment by recording to the sequencer.

The keys to the city
Syntakt’s keyboard mode gives you a whole bunch of different scales to play with.

There are some familiar faces and some maybe a little less familiar for you to try out, helping you discover new places and taking things to another level.

Play across a single octave like on a piano keyboard. Or use fold, and have several octaves laid out in front of you.

Deep sound-shaping
Syntakt comes full of filter and envelope goodness. All tracks have a Multimode filter to put to use allowing you to emphasize different parts of your sound, with the digital tracks also able to call on Parametric EQ and a Base-width filter – an additional filter giving you even more sonic control.

Choose from two amplitude envelope types to define the ideal contour of your sound. Try out the ADSR envelope – for your wicked synth lines – or the simpler AHD envelope – perfect for transient percussive sounds.

"I have owned this beautiful work of art for over 20 years and have not put many hours on overall on this uniquely distinctive and visually stunning keyboard.. It use to belong to a famous Boston based composer and due to my work and other issues I have not been able to put in the time that I desire to utilize this BEAST of perfection. I fill that someone else should benefit from the creative sound pallet that this instrument can inspire from. I have recently had my tech go over the machine and replace the battery and has a clean bill of health. The Keyboard will be costume crated at no cost and shipping quotes will be determined by zip code. I will consider shipping this instrument world wide but I do prefer to ship this within the United States. I currently reside in Arizona and I'm willing to drive up to 400 miles in any direction to meet someone to take delivery of this Keyboard as an option to not shipping it.

This one was spotted and sent in via xonox who noticed the following: "No mention is made in the auction but there is AFX scratched on the surface of the machine. According to Ed DMX (DMX Krew), Aphex Twin used one on his early tracks. Interview here. It is not my auction, i have no insider knowledge on anything either. Is it possible it's indeed one of AFX's drum machines or is it some classic AFX prank ?"

The SD140 has only been featured on the site twice before this post.

"Up for sale a unique extremely rare vintage drum machine. impossible to find it in another place. Many years ago I found this diamond and made the service in a professional workshop. Please note - this is an old gear for the collection and synth enthusiasts, this drum machine is in working condition, but I will not accept any returns and no compensation after the sale - please accept it. These are the first innovative electronic music devices and therefore you can see in the pictures the old technology of plastic coatings and touch buttons have traces of use, but all functions and buttons are well work.- It runs on 220 volt AC.The sound of this beast is very unique, the sound structure and flow are capable of creating incredible emotions and creative potency. The sound is incredibly relevant, I give a detailed description below. "It's both cosmetically and functionally excellent. There are no dents or dings in the metal chassis. The paint, print, and logos are still intact and glossy. The end cheeks also have a nice glossy finish. The membrane buttons all work. There are no tears or rips in the membrane. All other knobs and controls work as intended. None of the keys are chipped/broken/repaired and they all trigger notes correctly. Yes, there are scuffs and marks on the end cheeks and a few very light scratches on the plastic display panel. The latter can likely be completely buffed out using plastic polish, if you desire. As you can see from the pics, though, the machine is in terrific condition overall. It's not like many of the beat-up examples you see on the 'Bay, where the sellers are asking outrageous prices."

Roman Bayou's Cinq: SE80 Beats 'n Band in a Boom* Box, in 5 (or so) Movements

What happens when one disappears into the wilderness road of one's mind (and mighty-mighty DP8) with a Boomstar SE80, a little help from its friends: Boom*s 4075, 5089, SEM, 3003, no fixed deadlines, the power and elegance of Kontakt, and a desire to inspire and be inspired? This piece "right there"—my two and a half year old daughters' go to phrase.

The Boomstar SE80 got the party started early with its remarkable capacity to generate very warm, acoustic sounding drum sounds, in addition to the emblematic, voltage-flavored fare. Hundreds of samples later—some put through "Waves" paces—I dragged my favs into a new sequence window at bar 1, with a fixed tempo, sans bar lines, and no particular key signature in mind.

Very non-random, if avant garde sounding patterns and melodies emerged, preparing me for an immersion headlong into West African rhythms, and demanding an extended vacay to the Isle of Dub. Once those pillars were in place all of the Stevie, Gino, Duke, Cameo, Zap, Monte Moir, and St. Regis (the band yo) chords, leads, and turns—produced by both the 4075 and SE80 Boomstars—colored and kept pushing until the Roger "vocalisms" of the dual resonant SE80 filters sat atop the throne, playing the solo diva, wowing the key Dub backbeats, and hitting the combo-organy voicing stretches. It was with great difficulty that I backed away the '80s knobs and switches, because of that intoxicating "vocality and warmth."

The drums, excepting one distorted fill which I enjoyed complimenting and co-opting with synthiness, the triangle (Drew Nuemann's brilliant 3003 creation recorded at 3% of unity—it's true Drew!), a crisp D. Neumann tom design (4075), a very Mike Neuble-ish 16th note triplet figure (SEM), an open hi hat (SEM), the crash cymbal (SEM), and the "Bonham" room mic kick drum from "Boomstar the Beguine" (SEM), were generated by the SE80; I made far more samples than I could press into service, but it was most enjoyable slipping and sliding them in whenever I could.

All of the leads are single sample stretches in Kontakt, or sampled performances (some of which went under the knife and tune); the chords are a mix of the same and individually tracked single note performances, which were in turn repurposed/retuned in various places spectrally in DP. The more percussive and filter driven polys represent the latter. It was amazing how good the "stretches" sounded—kind of reminded me of working with valve instruments and their gradually lower register, longer and slower envelopes ramps.

A bit of Boomstar 5089 begins supporting the last half of the Dub groove with a bass double, figure, and slide or two, snapping once in the 1st Movement (a pull from the "Shootout at the Boomstar Corral" YouTube vid for those still awake). The B* Moog filter also supplies the sub in the rejected "Simon Says" soundtrack moodiness in Movement 5. The piano and synth patches are from GarageBand, ported in via that .aiff stripping trick.

Boomstar 4075 gets its Gary Wright/Rene and Angela 2600 bass groove on, above the 5089 sub fray, yet under it's own classic lead sound; a bony redux of Movement 3's "Moir-ish" charm brings the effort to a conclusion.

Boomstar 5089 boomed both the intro bass and 1:53 breakdown.

Lest I forget, the SE80 freeform synth jazz dance of the 4th Movement (3:03), grinds into "that perfect machine voice like ELP's, "I am perfect are you!" Directly following it is my friend Dan's "kind of atmospheric, distorted, Tomita-esque mood till 4:51 whence come the mysterious morse code signals from the nether reaches of outer space." All of which follows the sub movement (small m) of the SE80 Beat/Glitch Boxing: the punctuation for the preceding micro Glam Synth beatdown.

Final Note: The ambient, "spooky sound starting at 0:43 which weaves underneath awhile," following the 1st Movement (really another sub movement...), is an SEM lead subjected to generous Paulstretching in Audacity.

via the seller: "I am the original owner of this beauty. I purchased Brand new in probably about 1982 and used it for some minor gigging, but mostly I used it in my song writing and recording. So it never was exposed to heavy traveling and abuse. It does have a couple of broken sliders which still work fine it's just that the little plastic sliders broke. I still have the pieces along with the little caps, and they could probably glued but I never had the desire to open up the chassis and do that since the sliders still work fine. You'll see what I'm talking about in the Contour Generator section. It's the Loudness - ATTACK & SUSTAIN sliders. They have red caps and those pieces are pushed into the the foam of the flight case. And also in the Mixer section it is missing the little green cap on the NOISE slider, which got lost along the way. Again it works completely fine without that little cap. You'll see all this in the pictures.

The Liberation was the first commercially produced Keytar style keyboard/synthesizer. It was big back in the 80's and is a classic analog machine. It has 2 monophonic VC Oscillators and a polyphonic capability so you can actually play organ type chords. But it's not like a 32 or 64 voice machine that you can play Big Lush chords. The Oscillators have Square, Triangle and Sawtooth waveforms. The keyboard is aftertouch sensitive. The neck of the unit features controls for Force, Glide, Mod Amount, Filter, Volume and a Pitch Bend Ribbon.

This unit does show some signs of normal wear and usage with minor scuffs and paint wear but overall it is in really good shape. It also comes in a Flight Case that, if I recall correctly, I paid a couple hundred for back in the day. This is a heavy duty case and not the guitar like case that I've seen. The case is in good shape although the foam padding has started to break down after all these years, so I've lined it with a moving blanket to help keep the foam from sticking to the keyboard..."
